I eagerly purchased the MEAP book so I could read it on a Kindle DX that arrived today :) Unfortunately, it looks like the images embedded in the PDF can't be rendered on the Kindle DX. It's a little weird, because another Manning book (Extjs in Action) works fine in PDF form. Just a heads up.

Huh... Unfortunately I know absolutely nothing about how PDFs on the Kindle DX work. Input would be appreciated!

It only says "Some elements on this page could not be displayed" on the Kindle. I converted the PDF using Adobe Acrobat ("Advanced" > "PDF Optimizer...") and the new PDF works fine. I think the images might be embedded using JPEG2000.

Here's a thread which discusses the issue a bit more:

The Amazon Kindle is an e-book reader developed by Amazon.com subsidiary Lab126 which uses wireless connectivity to enable users to shop for, download, browse, and read e-books, newspapers, magazines, blogs, and other digital media. The Kindle hardware devices use an E Ink electronic paper display that shows up to 16 shades of gray, minimizes power use and simulates reading on paper.

The Amazon Kindle Fire Review

The entire Kindle Fire plus the particular iPad 2 have high-resolution multi-touch screens. Then again, the actual Kindle pill has a small 7 inch screen as compared to be able to the particular iPad's 9.7 inch screen. So, subject to precisely what us plan using your tablet for, you would choose 1 over the particular alternative.
one of many downsides associated with the Kindle Fire pill typically is that it is lacking webcams. The actual iPad 2 comes alongside front and back cameras which have been superb for online online video talking or simply conferencing and also for creating video clips. Amazon Kindle e-book readers

The Amazon Kindle is a series of e-book readers now in its fourth generation. Amazon Kindle eReaders enable users to shop for, download, browse, and read e-books, newspapers, magazines, blogs, and other digital media via wireless networking. The hardware platform, developed by Amazon.com subsidiary Lab126, began as a single device and now comprises a range of devices — most using an E Ink electronic paper display capable of rendering 16 shades of gray to simulate reading on paper while minimizing power consumption.

The Kindle name was devised by branding consultant Michael Cronan who was asked by Lab 126 to name the product. Cronan and partner Karin Hibma suggested Kindle. Etymologically, the word “kindle” relates to “candle” and they felt this was an apt metaphor for reading and intellectual excitement.

Kindle hardware has evolved from the original Kindle introduced in 2007 and a Kindle DX line (with a larger screen) introduced in 2009. Announced in September 2011, the range now includes devices with keyboards (Kindle Keyboard), devices with touch sensitive screens (Kindle Touch), a tablet computer with a reader app and a color display (Kindle Fire) and a low-priced model with an on-screen keyboard (Kindle).

Amazon has also introduced Kindle software for use on various devices and platforms, including Microsoft Windows, iOS, BlackBerry, Mac OS X (10.5 or later, Intel processor only), Android, webOS, and Windows Phone. Amazon also has a "cloud" reader to allow users to read, and purchase, Kindle books from a web browser.

Content for the Kindle can be purchased online and downloaded wirelessly in some countries, using either standard Wi-Fi or Amazon's 3G "Whispernet" network. Whispernet is accessible without any monthly fee or wireless subscription, although fees can be incurred for the delivery of periodicals and other content when roaming internationally beyond the customer's home country. Through a service called "Whispersync," customers can synchronize reading progress, bookmarks and other information across Kindle hardware devices and other mobile devices.

In the last three months of 2010, Amazon announced that in the United States, their amazon kindle 2 review sales had surpassed sales of paperback books for the first time.

The Amazon Kindle 4

The Amazon Kindle 4 (aka Kindle 4th Gen, Kindle Touchless or just plain Kindle) was announced as a sidenote to the colour Kindle Fire and touch-enabled Kindle Touch. But in many ways it was the most significant of the three, because of its extraordinary price.

The UK remains the poor cousin to the US in the world of dedicated ebook readers. While many are on the market, to be a real success they need the vertical integration of being linked with a book seller, both for usability and the subsidy to the initial purchase price.

A stand-alone reader needs to make a profit for the manufacturer from the retail price alone, while a book seller device can make its money from the books and so can afford to be priced cheaply. And Amazon as the biggest book store can subsidise its ereaders the most.

As a result we really only have Amazon's Kindle, missing out on other book seller-tied devices such as the Nook and Kobo.

Worse, we currently only have one of the new generation of Kindles, the others being restricted to the US (presumably for supply reasons). And to add salt to the trans-Atlantic wound, our new Kindle costs £89 compared to $79 (around £50) in the States.

But we do at least have one of the next-gen Amazon Kindles, and it's still very, very cheap. So how does it stack up?

Well, unlike the Kindle Touch and Kindle Fire, the plain Kindle is basically a cut down and repackaged version of last year's Kindle 3 - now renamed the Kindle Keyboard - rather than one with new technologies and features added.

That's not necessarily a bad thing, because the Kindle Keyboard was the best ebook reader on the market in terms of screen, book choice and price.

If you put the price of the US version out of mind, £89 really is cheap as chips for an ebook reader, especially one as accomplished as this.

As well as opening up ereaders to a new market, when the reader is priced this low you're less worried about taking it into environments where you might think twice about using expensive electronics, such as the bathroom or the beach. While not exactly disposable, it's not £500-worth of iPad to wreck either.

Amazon famously sells more books in Kindle ebook format than in print these days, and this price point is only going to accelerate that trend. Check out more information on kindle review on this site.

I forgot to mention it here, which mattered more! I have personally tried it out but I still prefer the Mobipocket method because it’s much less error-prone, at least for the PDF’s I tried converting. Amazon does offer a free PDF conversion service for all Kindle members as stated in your comment. I mentioned it in my Kindle 3 review but somehow:

The formatting is essentially the same "quality" for ePub or Kindle. Most of us get there by running a file through a filter that reformats. The quality comes in depending on how well the filter does its job and if someone at least scans for problems after that filter is done, also Vibosoft mobi to ePub converter is also great.: http://www.vibosoft.com/ebook/convert-mobi-to-epub-mac-win.html
